I’m currently reading The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl. Usually I finish a book in no time at all but this one I have really been taking my time with reading. This book reads like literature with lots of poetic phrases. By reading more slowly then usual I’m able to take in and understand everything.
Set in Boston 1865, a series of murders has been happening inspired by Dante Alighieri’s ‘The Divine Comedy’ (La Divina Commedia). Three known poets and Dante scholars Longfellow, Holmes and Lowell together with their publisher Fields set out to solve the murders.
While most historic thrillers (Da vinci Code, Rule of Four) play in modern time The Dante Club takes you back in time where serial murder was uncommon and solving it left only to the great minds. The story is more slow phased then modern stories, it’s more about theories then actions.
For people who like a lot of details this is a good book and you get to learn about Dante’s La Divina Commedia.
