Hosting/fcgi issuesJanuary 3rd, 2008

Since yesterday early my site was gone. I woke at 5am to find out that my account has been suspended. After emailing support they told me they suspended my account due to load spikes of disptach.fcgi, thus making the whole server unstable. I couldn’t do anything about it as I had no access to my account, it took them a whole day to unlock my account so that I could try and fix the problem.

When I finally had access I started by making back-ups which was long overdue. I re-installed a fresh copy of Simplelog and removed all old installations. After a couple of hours I had managed to have a new installation with my theme in place and Mint setup again. But fcgi still keeps acting weird. Support told me that more customers run Simplelog without problems so I don’t get why I keep having issues with fcgi, namely it keeps terminating/restarting, when I run grep fcgi to see running processes I get like 10 disptach.fci running. This obviously is no good at all.

The ASO (A Small Orange) forums have nothing on fcgi terminating/restarting over and over again, someone mentioned the same problem a year ago but no one replied.

Support told me to run on CGI while I figure out the problem, so now my site is running on CGI which is slower but stabler. I have no clue at all what is causing the fcgi problem. I have a fresh out of the box install with no modifications, others also use Simplelog on ASO without problems so I’m really clueless as what the problem could be.

No hosting offers scripting support, but in my opinion this is an application that won’t work correct on their servers. So they are not helping me figure this out. If I had the money right now I would switch to another host where I know Simplelog runs very smoothly but I can’t afford that right now and I still got 4 months to go on ASO before renewal.

Now a day to get a website running 99.9% of the time requires all kind of skills, makes me understand why services like Blogspot are such a success.
